ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Demand at local food pantries is at an all time high. With the prices of food increasing, it has become more challenging to put food on the table for some families in the Capital Region. This June, NEWS10 is teaming up with Broadview Federal Credit Union to help those most affected in our community through the No Neighbor Hungry program.

Starletta Renee, the CEO of the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region has seen the increase in food insecurity go up, first hand. “If food pantries weren’t here there would be a lot more people hungry, unfortunately,” she explained.

The YWCA is home to 94 women and more than 50 children. The food pantry located in the basement of the building remains a crucial resource to help fill in the gaps and keep bellies full, but it has been getting harder to keep those shelves stocked. Renee shared, “The truth is we can’t do this alone, prices are rising, shelves are empty. Too many of our neighbors are going hungry.”

Michael Castellana, CEO of Broadview Federal Credit Union, explained, “The cost of basic staples through the roof. The programs, government programs are influx. No one knows where their next meal is coming from, and that’s where we need to step in.”

To help feed neighbors in need, Broadview, along with NEWS10, are helping raise as much money as possible through the month of June. No Neighbor Hungry will benefit food pantries across the Capital Region. 15 individual pantries will receive funding from the campaign. One of them is the Food Pantries for the Capital District, which services more than 70 pantries, further ensuring that no neighbor goes hungry in the Capital Region.
